There's this little app called Hush, and I'm sure you've heard of it. There are a ton of different brands listed on it, from indie brands to mainstream brands. However, I think it's most known for the indie brands that are "duping" high end makeup. I was curious and I've loved the look of the Huda Beauty Desert Dusk palette since it was first announced, but could not accept that price tag. In comes Bad Habit with the Athena palette, which is said to be a dupe. I purchased it and I've used it a lot, so I'm ready to tell you if it's a dupe or not.

Bad Habit Athena Palette

The Bad Habit Athena palette is only $14 vs the $65 price tag of the Huda Desert Dusk palette. What I feared upon purchasing this palette was the quality would reflect the price. There are 18 shadows in this palette, eight are matte, six are pearl-shimmers, three are duo-chrome toppers, and one is a pressed glitter. In the pan, the colors look identical to the Huda Beauty Desert Dusk palette, but I do not have it to compare swatches.

Athena Palette Review

The formula of the shadows varies. The mattes tend to be pretty powdery, but blendable. They're pigmented but not super pigmented, so you'll need to build them up. The shimmers and duo-chromes need a sticky base to work, and the glitter needs glitter glue. The problem that I have is, the shimmers and duo-chromes do sit well on top of a base but if the base touches the matte color, it darkens it. You can't blend it out and you can't layer other shadows on top to fix it. It's literally a situation where you have to remove your makeup and start over, which isn't ideal. This has happened to me three separate times. Without a base, the shimmers and duochromes are very underwhelming, even when applied with your fingers. It makes this palette a little awkward to use, and it is not user friendly.

Athena Palette Swatches

You may remember that I loved the Subculture palette and I still do. A problem everyone seemed to have with Subculture is that it's powdery, there's a ton of fall out, the colors are patchy, and whenever you tried to use a base, the mattes would darken and become totally unblendable. Well, I didn't experience these problems with Subculture, but it's exactly what I'm experiencing with the Athena palette. Building up the mattes too much results in patchiness, layering too many shades makes it muddy, mattes stick to a base and darken, the shimmers and duochromes aren't great without a base.

Athena Palette review

I've heard so many good things about this palette and I was disappointed. The palette is okay, it's usable but it's underwhelming. It's a little more complicated to use than I'd like and I haven't found a way to make it work. I don't like going into an eye look knowing that there's a good chance I'll have to start over at least once. I've tried different bases, but it always ends the same. It's frustrating and I like doing my makeup and dislike being frustrated while doing so.

Overall, I can't recommend this palette as a dupe. Sure, the colors look the same but I don't think they actually perform the same. I haven't heard of anyone using the Desert Dusk palette having these issues. If you're willing to put in the extra work, the colors are pretty. You just have to be very careful how you apply them and keep those mattes 100% dry.

I hate giving negative reviews but I think it's important to let you know when something isn't worth the money. $14 may not be much for a palette but it's around the same price as a palette from Colourpop and their shadows are awesome. Again, the colors in the Athena palette are gorgeous. If you want to use the shimmers over a base, you'll absolutely have to use a different palette for your matte shades. I wish I loved the palette, but I just can't.

Desert Dusk Dupe

Quickly, let's discuss the Hush App because it's the only way to purchase this palette. The Hush App requires your Paypal information to set up your account before you can even use it, which I don't like. For the purpose of this review, I did it anyway. The app is a little awkward to use and isn't very intuitive; it's very busy. I placed my order and had to wait almost three weeks to receive the palette, which is insane. After it shipped, it took 4 days to get to me, the rest of that time my order was marked as processing. So, as far as that goes, don't order something if you don't want to wait upwards of two weeks to receive it!

  3. I am so wary when it comes to dupe because oftentimes, they aren't exact dupes. Good review as always

  5. I saw the shades and thought "I NEED THIS" then I read through and realize I'm not an expert and if it's not user friendly, it won't work for me. Thank you for providing these honest reviews.

  6. In magazines they are always showing Steal vs Splurge and this is an example of why I dislike articles like that. The colors may look the same but the quality is what counts and this doesn't have the quality I'd want to use. I haven't heard of either Hush or Athena and I doubt I'll search for either now.

I appreciate your honest review, and I agree, it doesn't sounds like this palette is even worth the $14 price tag. I don't have the Huda to compare either, but maybe you can pick up the few key singles and create your own for a fraction of the price?

I appreciate your honest review. I have this palette and pretty much like it. I don't really compare it with my Desert Dusk, so keeping that aside, it is overall a great buy. And I agree with you regarding the app, its weird and horrible most of the times.

The shipping experience sound less than great for sure. Bummer, some pretty shades but the extra work hummm not sure! I love the bottom row tho!

I love the colors but no thank you on the quality. I’d rather splurge if it meant better formula.

  14. I've heard a lot of mixed things about the Hush app and their palettes. I adore my Desert Dusk palette so much, though I agree completely about the price tag.

  15. I didn't even know you had a blog! Glad I found it. :)

How odd. I actually had that very issue with Subculture, but not with Athena. I love my Athena palette! I've used it so many times. I wonder if different bases just yield different results? I'm sorry to hear you didn't like it though. I know how frustrating it can be trying to work with a product that just won't cooperate.
