Urban Decay is a cruelty free brand and one of my personal favorites. They've been on a roll releasing new products lately, like the Naked Heat Petite Palette that I reviewed last week. This time we're talking about the Urban Decay Disco Queen Holographic Highlight Powder and Highlight Stick.

Before I even start, let's just go ahead and get this out of the way. This isn't a product for everyone. There is a limited amount of consumers for a purple highlighter. That's just the way it is. However, I am one of the people who loves colored highlighters, so I'm all over this. Also, holographic? Not so much. It's more iridescent, slightly duo-chrome but not holo. Holographic gets thrown around a lot by companies, but rarely are makeup products truly holographic.

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the Disco Queen Holographic Highlight Powder and Disco Queen Holographic Highlight Stick. The packaging on the powder is different from other Urban Decay products. The top of the compact is clear plastic. I personally do not mind this, however, there are many people who believe this makes a product look "cheap". It can, for sure. But, you have to admit the convenience of being able to see the product through the packaging. The Disco Queen Highlight Stick is a silver component with a clear cap. I don't mind the packaging, but it definitely doesn't feel as sturdy and I'd be a little afraid to travel with it because I'm not sure it could handle being squished at all.

The Disco Queen Highlight Stick is a drier formula than I'm used to for cream highlight. The base of this is almost totally clear, but has the slightest white to purple shift. The majority of the color in this comes from shimmer that is a purple/blue duo chrome. This can look glittery, you've been warned.

The Disco Queen Highlight Powder is also drier than I'm used to for a powder. It almost feels scratchy in the pan, however, it's pigmented and applies nicely to the skin. There is no fall out from the powder, as it's not soft. This is definitely purple. Depending upon the light, it will look more like a hot pink, purple, or bright blue. It's a really cool effect, but this also has shimmer and some glitter, so that's something to be wary of if you're avoiding that kind of thing.

Here are swatches of the powder, stick, and the two layered.

Layering the Disco Queen Highlight Stick and Powder will give a more intense effect. The best part of this highlighter is that you can layer them or wear them separately, but no matter how you wear them, they don't leave that weird cast on your skin. With most colored highlighters, when your highlight isn't in direct light, you can normally see discoloration where it is, but I didn't experience that with the Disco Queen Highlighter.

So, why would you want a purple highlight? Well, I think it's a cool effect and it's different. Most people will use this at night, at a club, a bar, or something of the sort. We're almost into festival season as well, and this is perfect for that.

You can find these sold separately on UrbanDecay.com and at Sephora.
