I've been re-evaluating where I'm spending my money lately, and I've come to some potentially controversial conclusions. If my opinions are unpopular, that's okay. I'm not here to argue or to try to change someone else's mind, I'm just here to update you on some brands that I will no longer be covering on my blog.
So, let's get into it.
Let's start with Lime Crime. I haven't covered Lime Crime in quite a while and I actually no longer own anything from them. I don't think there's anyone on the planet who isn't aware of the Doe Deere controversy but there's a lot. Like, a whole lot. Here's the super short, very condensed version: She's a bully who threatens anyone who says anything negative about her products, she had issues with the FDA over ingredients and mislabeling, and thousands of credit card information was compromised and she basically didn't care and denied responsibility for months. I've come to the conclusion that she is not someone I want to support and so I won't. Simple.
Next, Gerard Cosmetics. This probably isn't a shock since I don't condone bullying and negativity. Since the owner of Gerard Cosmetics was shown on Snapchat calling a girl ugly, I haven't taken a second glance at their products. There are people who argue that she said the girls personality was ugly, but how is that better? Either way, a business owner is tearing down a customer and that's never okay.
On that same note, there is Jeffree Star Cosmetics. This one kind of makes me sad but I just can't anymore. I bought one of the summer shades from his collection, but I won't be covering it here. There is no way I'm going to go into all of the controversy, because it would literally be the longest blog post and no one would read it. However, he has bullied other YouTubers, bloggers, celebrities and customers. He tears down anyone who dares to disagree with him and he's said many hateful, racist things. He's a misogynist and has a very bad public image that his half ass apologies do nothing to improve. Not to mention, there are serious inconsistencies with his products, from formulas to color changes. It's sad because his line is cruelty free and vegan, but there are other indie companies I could be supporting instead of buying Jeffree another car or designer handbag. He has a horrible attitude and he says he's humble, but shows off what everyone who has supported him has bought him constantly which is the total opposite. Don't get me wrong, it's great to have nice things and show them off, but he takes it a step too far. So, while I may occasionally still wear the lipsticks I have and you may see them on Instagram, I won't be covering them here and I will be looking for alternatives.
In addition to not wanting to support someone who already has too much and is a show off, I will never cover Kylie Cosmetics nor will I ever purchase from her. It's been proven time and time again that her formula is almost identical to Colourpop's, while Colourpop lippies are $6 and the Kylie lip kits are $29. With her products, you aren't paying for quality, you're paying for a name. I'd rather purchase from an Indie company because here's the thing, if you're buying from Kylie, you're paying for another vacation, another car, another house, whatever. If you're buying from a small indie company, you're paying for their first house, you're helping them send their kids to college. It's different. I can't contribute to one person's extravagant lifestyle. And speaking on the inconsistencies from the JS products, hers are inconsistent as well.
Companies that aren't cruelty free. I'm working on switching to cruelty free products. I still have some things to review that aren't cruelty free and a couple of blog posts coming up, but I am switching to an all cruelty free format. I will still be supporting companies that have parent companies who test on animals, such as Nyx and Urban Decay but I will not support the parent company directly, in this case, L'oreal. I feel that supporting the cruelty free companies beneath them sends an important message and I hope that in time all of these companies will drop the barbaric, outdated process of animal testing.
Morphe. I feel like every YouTuber has an affiliate code so they push them constantly. I won't buy them because I honestly believe they are the same as every other 35 color palette or whatever, such as the ones from Crown, Coastal Scents and AliExpress. The same goes for their brushes. I can't prove it to be true BUT I can see the similarities and the evidence. In addition, the shadows contain talc and mineral oil which are two ingredients I try to avoid. Talc is in a lot of eyeshadow brands, but I am a little sensitive to it so I try to avoid it.
Final unpopular opinion for the day: you may see me covering less of the companies who are doing the extravagant trips with YouTubers. Before anyone jumps on me, let me explain my thoughts on it. In my opinion, if a company has all of this extra money to spend taking YouTubers on vacations, they could be putting this money to use in improving their formulas, formulating new products, or lowering prices. I don't mind to pay more for quality products, but I do mind when I feel like I'm paying for a group of people to go on vacation. In addition, I cannot trust the reviews or opinions of this group of YouTubers on the brand after that trip. It feels like their opinions and positive feedback is bought and I don't want to support that. Simple, right?
So, that's my post of unpopular opinions for now.
Thanks for reading & let me know your unpopular opinions on these topics in the comments!
xx

  2. Thank you for this! It makes me feel so much better about not having Lime Crime, Jeffree Star, or Kylie cosmetics haha. But seriously, thanks for educating me on the implications of buying from these people. I should definitely be more careful in the future on who to buy from.

  3. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who isn't supporting Lime Crime, Jefree Start and Kylie Cosmetics. I actually didn't know about the issue with Gerard Cosmetics. I was thinking about getting two liquid lipsticks from them but...I guess I'll get them from another brand. ( I would totally support colourpop if their international shipping wasn't super expensive)
    Take care*

  5. This is the first of your blog posts I've ever seen and read, and now I'll be coming back for more, certainly. Thank you. Thank you very much for your forthrightess and courage to say these things. There are more than enough cosmetic brands out there to fulfill anyone, and I think consumers should be more discerning about who and what they are supporting!

  6. Gosh yes!!! Agree 100% with every single word you wrote. It's sad though that with all the possibilities (for companies that is) to be cruelty-free, to improve formulas (via reading the feedback) and generally work on creating something wonderful they're just obsessing with more money. And you have to pay a lot of attention to the products you're buying which makes the whole shopping process less fun and more tiresome. That's a shame really that so many people still don't care about companies they're supporting and just go with the name (like KJ or JS).

  8. Love your honesty girl!! I totally agree with you about all the companies except Morphe. I am not a fan of Kylie Cosmetics at all! I have one lipstick from Gerald cosmetics and it is so bad! It smells so awful! I love the color but it just smells terrible. I had to throw it away! I also don't like Jeffree's attitude! Companies should listen to the criticism and use that to improve their companies. Why has companies like Revlon, Wet n Wild, etc been around so long? Because they listen to the consumer and constantly improve and reinvent their products. I do like Morphe but I am so tired of hearing every YouTuber talk about them. I am not a huge fan of their palettes even though they are pretty good. Their shipping is outrageous. However, their brushes really are great. I wouldn't be a fan of them if they didn't have their subscription box. That is actually a really nice option because you get brushes for only $20/month and the shipping is free. Also, YouTubers aren't talking about that service because it is actually a good option and price lol. I have a bunch of their brushes and they are pretty good. They aren't as amazing as some of my high-end but they are a good alternative. Great post girl! You're awesome!

  10. I love reading posts where people are honest without worrying about what others say. I think the exact same way about the Kylie cosmetics. Over rated for what they are. Like you said you are paying for the name!
