Body Modifications...how we're mistreated because of them.

Today, I was going to post a blog sale, but I'm going to do something a little different, and I'm going to rant a little. Feel free to overlook this post, but I have a few things I'd like to say.

I can't stand being judged. And, I'm judged everyday, because I have piercings and tattoos.
Everyone with piercings and tattoos is judged, for one reason or another.

This really hadn't bothered me until I started looking for a second job and realized that because I have a facial piercing and multiple tattoos, I wouldn't even be considered most places.

If I complain to someone about not getting a job because of my piercing, I'm just told to take it out.
What people don't realize is how tattoos and piercings are an extension of who you are. To me, asking me to take out a piercing is the same as me asking you to lose 10 pounds. It's not right to ask someone to change something about themselves. How is my piercing affecting another person negatively? That is what I do not understand.

My tattoos and piercings are MINE. Not YOURS. There should be no consequences to me having them, just because it "offends" someone else. How is a piercing offensive? I'm not asking you to get one. I'm not poking a hole through your face.
I do not understand how people can be so cruel about something like this.

It's honestly the same as you not hiring me because I'm not physically attractive to you, and that's what it comes down to.
Because you don't like the way piercings or tattoos look, it's "offensive".

I just think this is a load of shit, ya know?

I have a half sleeve and two other tattoos. I have my ears pieced twice, a navel piercing and a medusa.
I'm well on my way to getting even more tattoos and a nostril piercing, as I had one before and was FORCED to take it out to work.

I will NEVER do this again.
The discrimination has to stop.

Body modification is an extension of who we are. It's the same as dying your hair, fake tanning, buying new clothes or losing 10 pounds.  Plastic surgery is also a body modification, but no one is discriminated against for getting bigger boobs.

It's just so frustrating knowing that I'm being discriminated against for being who I am, rather than pretending to be something that I'm not.

I have a deep love for tattoos and piercings, and I think they're absolutely beautiful.
I see no reason why someone should be mistreated for having them, and for being true to themselves rather than molding themselves to what society wants to see.

I talk about makeup and hair everyday. I tan, I wear extensions, I wear contact lenses and makeup. All of this is a temporary modification to your body, and it's part of who you are. To me, tattoos and piercings are no different.

I find it hard to believe that being discriminated against for tattoos and piercings isn't against the law. For some people, it's a spiritual experience, yet it isn't seen as a religious discrimination unless you are part of the Church of Body Modification, and that still won't keep you from being mistreated.

I'm sorry that this post is nothing more than a huge rant, but I feel very strongly about this, and I hope some of you do as well. Because, discrimination against tattoos and piercings is only the beginning.

  1. Really enjoyed your rant hehe :) Totally feel you, I've had a couple of facial piercings, I had my cheeks and lip pierced, a septum, my ears pierced multiple times and I had to take all of them out for work as well. It's a shame people won't accept this just like they accept boob jobs and bleached hair but what can you do! I've been treated like sh** so it wasn't worth it anymore unfortunately xx

  4. Completely agree! What gets me is it doesn't just affect jobs, it effects everyone you come into contact with. I used to have snake bites, which I got while I was still in a job (thankfully my boss at the time didn't care at all what I did with my body), I ended up leaving that job and then moving to Canada for a while and met a guy who I got pretty serious with - only problem being that his mother couldn't handle the fact that he and I both had piercings. In the end we just took them out because it was easier then having to hear all the 'comments' about them.

But to this day I completely regret taking them out (Especially since I am no longer with the guy), I may actually get them re-pierced but currently looking for a job and as you have pointed out it really would lower my employment opportunities. People need to stop dwelling on what other people do with their bodies and just worry about their own lives.

Good luck finding a second job, just keep your chin up! x

  5. I completely agree, tattoos and piercings are beautiful and it's not fair that people are discriminated for this.
People do other horrible things to their bodies like you mentioned plastic surgery! That disgusts me but I don't discriminate against them! It's not fair at all! I admire people with tattoos and piercings and have a couple myself!
Don't let it get you down, people will always judge...

  6. interesting the comparison with plastic surgery - I'd never considered that. I have a tattoo, but I would never consider getting boobs or a nose job for example, because THOSE things seem extreme. But society disagrees!

  7. So sorry to hear about your experience. Some people can be so narrow minded and scared of things / people who are different from them. Society won't change overnight, I hope you find an employer who will see you for you. Good luck finding a second job!

  9. World see people with piercing and tattoos as "trouble". That's prejudice and ofcourse wrong. I'm sorry to hear that you're having a tough time but taking it off, or rather changing yourself for others never even makes things any better. They'll always keep asking for more -_-
why don't you try to get a job at some parlour as an stylist or something that has fashion in it? :) that might work out for you! ;) xoxo
Good luck and don't let them get you down.

  13. Τhis is such a great post, I totally agree with everything you say. I have several face piercings but only one tattoo, I want to get more but I'm afraid of facing problems in my future job for that reason. It's too sad society won't let us be who we want to be without facing discrimination..

  14. There should really be a law against discriminating against people for body mods! As it stands now, it's considered an accessory or fashion choice like clothing, shoes, bracelets, necklaces, etc. but I think you have a good point in comparing it more to plastic surgery. There will always be limits as there is even with plastic surgery, like getting horn implants vs boob job and the tattoo equivalent of like a political slogan on your neck vs a butterfly on your arm...

  15. I get it people don't look on brains or qualification or how capable your are or don't give any chance to develop, If you don't get a chance you wont get experience, that another bS they do allot nowadays don't give you a chance cause you don't have 3 years experiences, while maybe I'm more capable and more dedicated than those who have.

  16. Agreed!!! What do tattoos and piercings have nothing to do with personal relations!!! Let people express themselves how they like!

  18. There are places that do accept people with piercings and tattoos but it's usually limited to alternative shops, or roles where you aren't seeing customers. I'm always impressed when I see staff that have piercings or tattoos because it makes me feel that they treat people as individuals. I've noticed most of the staff on the tills at Tesco near where I work have piercings, coloured hair etc. amongst the usual middle aged women and older staff. To me that is a reflection of society - we are all different and should be celebrated.

Where I work there is a girl who has several facial piercings, and I'm glad my workplace is happy to overlook appearance and hire someone for their qualifications.
